Baku Railway terminal station

Azerbaijan’s first railway terminal station was commissioned in Baku in 1880. Because this building was mainly intended for transporting laborers to the oil fields and ports, it was not suitable for receiving passengers coming in the capacity of tourists, as well as the officials and foreign businessmen visiting on Tbilisi-Baku route. The fast-developing Baku city needed a modern railway terminal station which could play the role of a business card.   

The new terminal station design of Baku railway station was approved on 10 November 1882. The designer of Baku-Tbilisi railway was Christianf Constantinovich Vasilyev who used to work as the railway architect. The solemn opening of the terminal station took place on 10 January 1884. The new building which was called “Tbilisi terminal station” become one of the most beautiful terminal stations of the empire.  

In 1970’s the old terminal station buildings couldn’t tolerate the stress falling on them. There was a need for a new and more modern terminal station building. That is why the construction of a new terminal station building between the “Tbilisi terminal station” and the current “28 May” metro station started. The new Baku terminal station was actually a combination of a terminal station and a hotel. The terminal station designed to serve the patients and to have a 16-storey hotel was the largest terminal station in the Caucasus. In 1976, the new railway terminal station was solemnly inaugurated.

The next overhaul of the Baku Railway Terminal Station was completed in 2017. On 10 February 2017, the terminal station was commissioned after the major overhaul. Ilham Aliyev the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and his wife Mehriban Aliyeva familiarized themselves with the new amenities created at Baku Railway Terminal Station after the overhaul.

The facade of the major building of the terminal station was reconstructed by preserving the architectural style and major repair work was done within the building. Also, the ticket sales offices, passenger platforms have been renovated in a modern style, escalators have been replaced with new ones. Elevators for freight, passengers and disabled persons have been installed. Administrative rooms and shops and catering facilities meeting modern standards were created during the major overhaul. Breastfeeding rooms, waiting halls, storage rooms have been given to the use of passengers. 8 modern tunnels were built with 4 of them providing access to the terminal station, 4 of them providing access to the city.   

7 platforms and 8 roads of the terminal station were repaired under the works carried out. Double-benches have been installed on the platforms. The delegation hall has also been renovated in a modern style during the major overhaul.   

“ASAN communal” № 2 is functioning on the second floor of the terminal station building. This center serves all citizens irrespective of their place of registration, as well as all the passengers using the terminal station. 

Sumgayit Railway Terminal Station

The Sumgayit Railway Terminal Station was opened in 1958 and recommissioned in 2015. Under decree dated 22 January 2018 of the President Ilham Aliyev, the new Sumgayit Railway Terminal Station was built.

The total area of the rebuilt 3-storey Sumgayit Railway Terminal Station is 5,5 thousand square meters. There is a waiting hall, ticket offices, info desks, police stations, server rooms, storage cabinets on the first floor of the building. Leisure facilities with modern design serve the comfort of the passengers. There are offices and restrooms for machinists and a kitchen on the second floor.

Modern security cameras, firefighting systems and HVAC systems have been installed in the building. There is parking space on the ground floor of the terminal station. Additionally, there are turnstile buildings, two-store relay and signaling equipment building, high and low platforms, power substations, water pump station, boiler room and railroad section point building there.

A total of 7 roads have been reconstructed at the station and the total length of the installed railways is 5020 meters. 12 turnarounds, 43-meter-long underground pedestrian crossing and underground platform access have been installed at the complex. The communication and signaling works along the whole station have been completely upgraded, electric pylons, beams and catenaries have been installed. Landscaping and renovation works have been done around the terminal station.  

Sabunchu railway terminal station

Sabunchu and Baku stations commissioned in 1880 were the first two railway stations of Azerbaijan.

According to decree dated 22 January 2018 of President Ilham Aliyev Baku-Sabunchu railway line was reconstructed. The Sabunchu Railway Terminal Station which is a part of the project was completely reconstructed. 

The Sabunchu Railway Terminal Station was inaugurated on 21 May 2019.

The total area of the 3-storey building is 4,1 thousand square kilometers.

There is a waiting hall, ticket sale offices, information desks, server rooms, storage cabinets on the first floor of the building. The leisure facilities which have a modern design serve the comfort of the passengers. The building has all the necessary conditions for the workers’ labor activities, as well as special conditions for the people with restricted mobility. There are modern security cameras, firefighting systems and HVAC systems, as well as escalators, lifts, 17 turnstiles, two underground pedestrian crossings. Two new platforms have been built, lighting poles have been installed and modern passenger stops have been built at Sabunchu terminal station under the project. The three railway lines at the station have been totally renovated. Also, a three-story building for the railway police has been built in Sabunchu terminal station and equipped with the necessary equipment.
